If for some reason you ever want to play this game, try playing it with friends.
Solo it feels depressing but not in the typical Metroid fashion. Online with randos probably won't be an option since even after like a year the game was was already dead (hardly any hosts, let alone full player counts), and even if you manage to find other players, chances are they will suck at the game, wasting your time by making you miss out on the bonuses (which are sometimes necessary to get enough score to "complete" the levels), sometimes they'll even do it on purpose, and some other times the host will just disconnect halfway through, kicking everyone to solo anyways.
All of this could've probably been avoided if Nintendo hadn't decided to clearly advertise this to a younger audience, evidenced by the chibi design, the bodypaints, Blastball, but more notoriously the lack of real voice chat, present in Hunters, a game released more than 10 years before this game, instead dumbed down (along with the gameplay itself) to a grand total of 4 slots of prerecorded dialogue with the option to change the default ones to other, not very communicative messages anyway.
Overall, I'd say the lack of depth could be forgiven if it was a competent multiplayer game, and while you can have some fun playing it solo, it didn't even compare to the matches I played with people I had immediate communication with. All of this coming from someone who regretfuly wasted money on this, missing out on the PSTV when it was dirt cheap (it haunts me to this day).

One of those cases where some suit at the game's pitch probably said "hmm yes, nice robot sports game you have here, we own the Metroid Prime trademark and it's not in use, why not use that name?"
Sometimes it works out fine like Prey, other times you get this.

This game's existence is responsible for one of my favorite Mega64 skits and for that I am grateful
