^ This is spot on 100% Felt like I was basically playing Dark Souls 2 again, same terrible level design. Had some cool boss battles, but other than that its just bland on every level.
combat is quite fun, co-op works shockingly well, and i really liked the interconnectivity of the world, but these guys really took every single bullshit part of traditional fromsoft design (cryptic easy to fail quests, gank squads, enemy placement designed to fuck with you, etc) and threw it into this game with full confidence. still a good time, just know it'll piss you off
Maybe it’s just because I’m a huge DS2 SOTFS enjoyer but I love playing this game so far! Just finished lies of P which I still think is better but while this game has more jank it also is pretty ambitious and takes way more risks than that game does. Absolutely adore the umbral world and how it adds so much to level exploration and design. Have no idea what people are talking about with enemy abundance just because I feel like there is great ranged options for crowd control and the most of the umbral are weak but can stagger you out of attacks making you consider you’re placement before attacking. Certain elements of the combat felt off at first especially the crazy roll distance and some of the speed of the weapon animations but I’ve gotten the feel for it and found the faithful bludgeon which is a fantastic bonk hammer with a natural feeling moveset
I wonder how this game would be if Deck13 had developed it. The Surge 1 and especially 2 were pretty good and i'm curious how they would've treated this game after people didn't like the first one.
also, what's the point of a reboot of a game made by a different developer that wasn't even successful in the first place? just call it a different name or something
As someone who has a hard time picking a favourite between Dark Souls 1, 2, and Bloodborne, seeing 4 comparisons to Dark Souls 2 and a mention of this capturing pre-DS3 From has me very intrigued now. And I did not care for the first lol
