I actually like the way it feels to control this game, but my GOD does the level design make this aggressively unfun, especially if you're going for 100%. It harshly punishes you for trying to explore, and some of the most fun and engaging gimmicks - like halfpipes and those hold-a/b platformers - are left until the last handful of worlds and only used once or twice in total. To be fair, a big part of the frustration came from needing to play on my old unmodded GBA, which meant no backlight and a smudged screen, but you'd hope that playing on native hardware wouldn't detract from the experience. For the game's sake I hope it's somehow better on a proper Game Boy Color.
Okay, having said all that, I just cleared Extra mode and it seemed to go a whole lot smoother, even with all the red stars. So maybe it was just a matter of getting good.
Played this on Switch for the first time since getting it at launch for GBC as a kid. What surprised me most was just how repetitive the worlds are and how much content keeps getting reused. You have like one ice level with lots of slippery tiles, but otherwise it felt disappointing going through such similar levels and fighting virtually the same two bosses (except for the final boss).
Also I remember this handling a lot better on the original GBC? Wonder if it was just the Switch's shape as I fell off and died a lot in this.
I think it's definitely one of those cases where this just plays so much better on the GB as it was designed for it, but even then, I agree 100% that it's just all-in-all really disappointing of a game.
Like, even when the controls do work... it's just not a fun game to play.
I really wish this game just had a dedicated jump button instead of making the player shake the Game Boy. I played this on Switch and anytime I slightly raised or lowered the controller it sent Kirby flying off
Game plays really well on the GBC, no idea about the Switch but I always had a blast with it and didn't have issues with the controls. Music's great too.
