When it was released not long after the launch of the N64, Gold was, almost by default, the best fighter available on the console. It did, at least, compared to Mortal Kombat Trilogy, make use of the console's power; it's presented well and the graphics, sound and music are good.
The game handles relatively well, though doesn't feel as technical or intuitive as Mortal Kombat. Its focus is on incredibly long combos, which are difficult to remember and learn and so I often resorted to button mashing or single special attacks. I do like that the game has a training mode, which was a bit of a rarity in its era, but ultimately I wasn't enjoying the core gameplay enough to dedicate long to it. The game's high difficulty, even when set to Very Easy, didn't help.
