HROT is a single-player retro FPS set in a small socialist country neighboring Soviet Union (Czechoslovakia) after an unspecified disaster in 1986. Those times were dark and terrifying and so is the game.
HROT is a boomer shooter that most resembles the gamefeel and setting of Quake 1, except that its filtered through USSR memery, including the ability to kiss the portrait of Lenin and wine being used as a health item.
Gameplay is really solid as far as these boomer shooters go. Weapons feel very functional and reactive, and enemies are fun to fight against. There is not a single enemy weapon that is a hitscan, so it can be all dodged if you have room for it (which you often dont in the claustrophobic tunnels of the game). Your arsenal is very typical for this style for this style of game, but what works works.
Level design is really fantastic, really riding that fine line between being complex enough to get lost once in a while, but not being too frustrating. The hunt for some keys or sequences got me stuck, but afterwards I consider myself to blame. Where the game drops the ball a bit is that some enemy encounters or traps feel plain unfair for someone playing for the first time, and a death will send you back to the beginning of the level if you dont have the habit to quick save. Genuinely got me close to quitting in some instances. Games offers 3 episodes, each taking about 1 hour and half, depending on skill level and amount of time stuck in levels.
The comedic elements of the game is one of the aspects that makes it standout from the crowd, but this will really depend upon ones its taste. Plenty of chuckles concerning memery about the USSR, references to other games and just plain Monty Python-esque sillyness.
All in all, its not quite the top tier boomer shooter we have seen, but still a really good time for those that enjoy the genre. I would say that its just a bit bellow DUSK and Cultic.
