An incredibly fun and interactive video game that just happens to be the greatest video game ever created. The tracklist is near perfection, the game is essentially never beaten in the best way, and for its time the AV and hit calibration is fantastic. Anyone who tells you the first game is any good you can basically write off as not having been any good at the game, because hammer ons are nearly impossible, but here they are spruced up to the point of being just about flawless, and used in quite fun ways with the tracklist. I still play this a decade later and it hasn't lost an ounce of its veneer.
HIGHEST ACHIEVEMENT: 5 Stars on every song including Jordan Expert(180k points)

The game that really put Guitar Hero on the map, and it's not hard to see why. Really well-rounded soundtrack and way better attention to charting on top of a sleeker engine and presentation make it so even the linear progression of the campaign is worth experiencing again and again. The bonus tracks are also way better, having a broader range of Boston locals and a few weird comedy asides from Metalocalypse and Homestar Runner. Add in bass/rhythm options and more than enough bonus content to keep you occupied, and you had the best single-player rhythm option for quite some time.

Great rhytmn game. It nails down the comedy aspect of rock n roll with the campy visuals, and complemets that with a track list that is half pop rock half hard rock.
What separates Guitar Hero from other rythmn based games i how well they manage to translate the guitar melodies into button presses, and as such the game is much more intuitive to play. Neat and diverse track list on this one, Its really satisfying when you are in the zone and manage to get over 100 notes straight. Its also a game with a really fast learning process.
Im guessing its even better with the guitar periferal, but unfortunatly i dont have the chance to test it out.

Found our old guitar and copy (in box!) at my parent's garage, decided to plug back in and man the timing seems ridiculously strict compared to what I remembered compared to III. This has the best aesthetic and soundtrack, despite Motley Crue and Warrant as some of the first songs in the career setlist lol.
I want to like the first two games more because aesthetically and musically they're great, but the lack of proper lag calibration makes these games too difficult for me to fully enjoy
Lag calibration is fine, the game is just a bit less forgiving with hitting notes than GH3 or RB2 was (but a lot better than GH1). If your muscle memory is used to 3 and beyond, their will be a bit of a learning curb.
Also I'd imagine this is best played on CRT if you have the PS2 version. Modern TV's always have some input lag, especially with composite.
