Fantasy Zone is one seriously breathtaking and inspired game. Ideally, this is what I've always wanted Defender to be. It has large ease of play from the very first level(before it spikes in the third), and you have the capability to collect coins so you could endow yourself in cool and useful upgrades such as speed-up, laser beams, and bombs. The voulentary upgrades is what really make Fantasy Zone work. And it's backed by roller-coaster, chord-heavy Beatlesque music, that kind Nintendo always seems to lack and Sega has in abundance.
Sadly even with the power-ups which you find to be quick to drain and disappear, the game gets brutal fast, and it only gets worse. It's basically a Touhou game by that point(I'm not kidding when I say it has stylised bullet patterns!) and you'll be hard pressed to beat it without turbo function coupled with some tools that slow your game framerate. Ideally get your cheats on MAME. Then you'll be able to soak in and take these beautiful pastel environments of Fantasy Zone for the sheer majesty that they are.
