Diddy Kong Racing does more of everything Mario Kart 64 did, just not as well, impressive AI and graphics excepted.
Its adventure mode is ambitious but shakily executed: taking cues from Super Mario 64, it features a hub world from which you can access races provided you've won enough balloons along the way, but its story is thin, unfinished and ultimately plays little part throughout. Gameplay is padded through gruelling repetition, requiring that each race is played no less than three times and with increasingly stupid objectives such as winning the race whilst collecting eight silver coins placed in infuriating locations.
In addition to kart races, the game features hovercraft and plane races. Ironically, the latter handle better than the karts, which are unruly and unpredictable. Overall track design is mediocre--often short, bland and familiar--whilst the items scattered about are uninspired and downright boring to use.

As much as I like this game and as much as it has going for it in its favor, the silver coin challenges alone keep this from being the best kart racer.
lol I not only beat the game, I did it using Pipsy as my main the whole time. Holy shitbawlz, what a twist, Batman. Who'da thought that sometimes a game can have a thing that sucks regardless of skill, you know? Or that difficulty could be subjective according to each player anyway, you know?
Ok, then lets talk about the difficulty. I think you're really underestimating how close you have to be to the coins in order to grab them. You can shorten the swinging by a lot more than what it looks like due to the disjointed hitbox. Also, sliding is key in doing this.
I know these things, I still think they suck. "Sometimes a game can have a thing that sucks regardless of skill." It's about how the structure of the game is built and flows together I have an issue with, not because they're hard (though I find a few of them are a little more difficult than they should be). Even making the silver coin challenges easier than Color a Dinosaur wouldn't make me change my mind on them being the worst aspect of the game. It's because I see them as adding to the senseless padding forcing the player to re-race each track numerous times, with one of those times being in a more annoying fashion (especially if you have to retry). I get they were trying to add more "content" into the game, but that doesn't make it any less irritating, especially with how the unlocks and story progression work. At the very least, if they had shifted that aspect of it around a bit the challenges might've been a little more tolerable, but they'd still be the worst part of the game for me.
It's like that camera in Mario 64: one of those things that, even if you can easily get used to it and still "git gud" anyway, that doesn't change the fact that the camera is still kinda shit. Hell, I'm sure if I really put my mind to it, I could also try and master Dragon's Lair on NES, that wouldn't make it a good game, at all. Not even close. Hell, it is pretty easy to "master" Color a Dinosaur, and that "game" still sucks lol.
really underrated for the fact that it had a pretty glorious single player campaign and even some neat exploration elements. IMO made it a much better play than MK64 for a lonely N64 kid who only had PSX playing friends
Yeah as a solo experience this was clearly better than Mario Kart 64. Such a cool story mode, great vibes, more varied environments and vehicles, actually challenging things to do, not to mention the overall presentation and graphics were 100 times better. That being said I think DKR was way worse as a multiplayer game... played MK64 so often with friends back then, this not so much. Probably why most hold MK64 in higher regard nowadays.
