D.R.O.D.: Deadly Rooms of Death (video game, Windows / Mac / Linux/Unix, 2005) reviews & ratings

I've heard a lot of good things about this game, but I have to say I've never been able to get into it. The big problem for me is how much unnecessary stuff is going on. I would rather advance through the rooms one by one as one does in most puzzle games. Instead the game makes you move around through a big dungeon. There's nothing to do in the halls but simply travel to the rooms that contain the puzzles, and often you're backtracking through the same areas repeatedly. Furthermore the puzzles themselves really overdo it with the monsters. Often you'll see a room with some 30 enemies, the first 4 or 5 of which are sufficient to kill you if you approach them incorrectly. The rest of the swarm just wastes your time as you repeat the same solution over and over. The rooms are also often huge, much bigger than they have any reason to be, again forcing a lot of walking around. I might put up with this stuff if the puzzles were really great or something, but they're just okay, and so the game just drags too much for me to enjoy it.
