Title
Global Assault is, for the most part, a refinement of the previous year's BattleTanx: there are new modes, new tanks, better controls and more. Gameplay is perhaps even faster-paced and more frenetic and yet the game runs beautifully smoothly. The campaign is a continuation of the first game's 'queenlords'-based storyline, but with the cheese factor amped up in a way that might detract from it if it wasn't so stupid that it's funny. Mission objectives are a little more thoughtful this time around, but difficulty spikes and overlong levels are common, which can be a real problem when you essentially run out of lives under the new 'tank bucks' system that allows you to buy tanks with currency and respawn. The first game's campaign might have the edge, here; it was challenging yet fair and fluid, whilst that balance feels a little off in Global Assault. For multiplayer, though, refinements considered, this one's the clear winner.
