The 3DO Company was founded by
Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins in a cooperation with other companies including
Panasonic. They developed the specification for the
3DO Interactive Multiplayer console, which was then produced under license by
Panasonic and other hardware manufacturers and launched in October 1993. As the hardware manufacturers would not receive any money from game sales, they had to sell the console at a profit, which resulted in a highly expensive product. Third-party support was also limited and dried up as the console failed to sell. The 3DO was discontinued at the end of 1996.
After the end of the 3DO, the 3DO company sold all rights to the technology and moved towards game development, acquiring several studios. They saw some success with their
Army Men series and the
Might and Magic series, but in the end had to file for bankruptcy in 2003.
