Cell shaded licensed cars look really cool, but unfortunately the handling in this game is terrible to the point of being almost unplayable.
Still though, this game can be had now for a few dollars at most and I think the visuals are at least worth that. Really cannot overstate how great they look.

A good way to describe Auto Modellista is if Capcom had an undisclosed peek at Gran Turismo 2 and thought "pfft, we could do better than that". Being a PS2 game that's edging near 15 years old as of this review, the online component has been long abandoned, so your content now sticks with the singleplayer component. In the Singleplayer mode, there is a "Career" option, which allows you to pick a choice of your first car. Given how unrecognized the game and the company behind it, the selection of cars is surprisingly meager, limited to car brands close to Japan, which a different Tokyo Extreme Racer series had done far better. After picking your car, you get dropped into an empty garage with a menu, including the option to begin a race or enter a tournament. No major gripes here, other than the menu flicking being slower than most.
As with any Car Racing game, the whole meat chunks are in the Gameplay, where Auto Modellista noticeably tumbles in quality. When you first start the game up, it just hits you with bags of soapy sludge. The car physics are horrible. Maintaining a straight line is impossible, and the slightest nudge of the controller will either send you 2-6 pixels left or right, or will set you veering and 'drifting' into a corner.
If you're looking for a distinctly 'Japanese' or 'foreign' Racing game, I would much rather recommend a person that Tokyo Extreme Racer series, whose also wonky physics aren't so nail-tearingly irredeemable.

if youre not a fan of the handling in this game try playing the original japanese release, they completely changed it in all later editions of the game. the original car physics are still pretty flawed but at least you can drive in a straight line and not constantly drift, and i think that experience is worth losing the extra content in the "US-tuned" version
just played the Japanese release and wow did Capcom fuck up the US version. Much better handling in the Japanese version, I can actually finish a race now
