Maemo

Released 03 November 2005 by Nokia
Gaming platform
Maemo was a software platform based on Linux with a variety of proprietary modifications by Nokia for their tablets and smartphones. While the majority of the system was open source, various elements of the interface and connectivity features were exclusive to Maemo and were closely tied to the hardware in Nokia's mobile devices.

A variety of games were available for Maemo, some of which were straight ports of Linux software, while others that took advantage of the touchscreen and hardware of the Maemo. It was also a very popular device on which to run emulators for other systems, both classic system and contemporaries like WebOS. Maemo could also run various browser games, such as those written in Flash or Java., so care should be taken to make sure a game is truly a Maemo title. All titles released for the Maemo will have the format of Download or Built-In.

Originally introduced with the Nokia 770 tablet in 2005, Nokia continued to ship versions of Maemo through 2011 with a version for the N900 smartphone. By 2010, Maemo began to be sunsetted in lieu of MeeGo a new Linux based system which was intended to merge Maemo and Moblin, Intel's Linux based platform for mobile devices. The Maemo platform and its open source roots made it attractive for hobbyists and software developers even long after Nokia dropped official support, and those efforts led to efforts like Maemo Leste, a project to implement Maemo as a truly open source operating system.
