Haha. Well, the film sits in a space I don't like. It's kinda fragmented and loose and sometimes a bit funny and sometimes beautifully shot, all things I like, y'know. But it relies on these boring hollywood ideas, like phoenix doing the rorschach and saying it all looks like vaginas, the 'processing' scenes that get phoenix all emotional and teary, or him being all fucked up and lost and drifting around and painting this labored and boring picture of a filmic fucked up lead role. I'm bored.

Then there's the last thirty minutes or so. I was willing to think it was an ok thing sitting somewhere between boring-ass hollywood tropes and some beautiful cinematography that made it feel like it wasn't a generic hollywood film. The ending bloody sucks. The inevitability of the love of his life not being there, hoffman finding him, him going back...so boring. Then there's some 'resolve' in phoenix's joking about the cult to the woman in sexy time. Some people sniggered in the cinema, but that's a really uninteresting end. And it's not uninteresting enough to warrant interest, if we're gonna think meta about it. Just a vague ending for a vague film that wants to be original and out there and comes full circle back to hollywood with its cliches and tropes and isn't aware of this process, therefore no meta / further intellectual reading (like Coens are aware of their return from arthouse to hollywood trope).

Makes me think, if you wanna watch something truly original and visually interesting, watch weerasethakul, kiarostami, early herzog etc, and if you wanna watch a great hollywood thing that presents itself as part of the tradition watch skyfall. If you wanna watch something inbetween watch coens or jarmusch.

...It's just I'm thinking PTA and the master, it's just not doing anything interesting because there's a break from hollywood and norm in some respects, but then the building blocks of the film are crushingly hollywood and dull. Dull and boring and hollywood because they are not AWARE of being hollywood, therefore not making any further interest, nothing further intellectual, meta, whatever. Just boring ass trope. Oh and here's some beautiful shit that looks great. And here's a fragmented / spliced section that kind feels non-linear and loose. Back to the boring old core building block ass trope. Over and over.
