Just came across your black metal thread from years ago, did you ever pursue that any further? Your request and reaction was really interesting, because it seems like you couldn't get into all of the borderline, sugar-coated, "hipster" (so-called) sure shots, but enjoyed the dark, raw, "true" black metal that outsiders don't usually take to very well. Heard anything else you've liked in the last few years?
I think Darkthrone, in their prime, are very melodic though, just not in the sense that people usually mean it when talking about metal. Transilvanian Hunger is so stripped down, to the point where the raw guitar tone and featureless blasting strips the whole thing down to nothing but a cycle of cold, romantic melodies. Unfortunately when people talk about "melodic" metal they tend to mean lots of synths, clean production, cheesy/conventional melodies etc
