I'm glad you got that from my list! I think if we all pretend to like just what's considered cool to like, that becomes oppressive and dishonest. Plus it distorts the corpus of all those "best of" lists. I think my musical taste is not that bad overall, so might as well assume the less popular things I like as well. Also, I don't trust anyone who says they don't like anything that's slightly embarrassing. ;)

I haven't seen the movie for about three or four years now and don't know if I would like it the same as i did back then. But I have a certain obsession for art that portraits urbanity, and despite his undoubtly commercial orientation Mann is an expert in getting across certain feelings and idiosyncrasies associtated to urban life. The death scene you mentioned is definetely important in that matter.
