Side-scrolling driving

Side-scrolling driving games combine the framing and gameplay of 2D platformers with the controls of driving games. Compared to typical side-scrollers, side-scrolling driving games are generally more physics based, with tilting forwards or backwards being used to avoid falling over and perform tricks, mainly flips. The genre experienced significant popularity on flash game sites, with Happy Wheels (2010) gaining explosive attention on YouTube during its peak. In addition to these more cartoonish games, the Trials franchise shifted this style towards a more serious racing direction, popularizing the use of motorcycles in these games.
