Foddian

Genre
Named after the developer Bennett Foddy, Foddian games have emerged as a niche of rage games, commonly played by streamers on sites like YouTube or Twitch for the streamer's reactions. These games are notorious for their arbitrary loss of progress and unpredictable punishments, ranging from minor setbacks to complete resets, and anywhere in between. The term "Foddian" was coined by streamer Ludwig Ahgren, who used it to describe the games featured in his "God Gamer Gauntlet." The challenge involved beating Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy (2017), Pogostuck: Rage With Your Friends (2019), and Jump King (2019), establishing these as defining Foddian games. Because of this, many Foddian games focus on fumblecore elements to add to the unfairness, and are most commonly platformers with a focus on verticality. Ludwig later organized the 2021 "Ludwig Jam" in October of that years, centered around the theme of Foddian games, which further popularized the term and promoted increased creativity within the genre.
