Daily minigame

A daily minigame is a game mechanic which involves a short level or minigame published on a daily basis, often with a limited ability to play the levels or minigames of previous days. These games are most typically in the format of guessing games, trivia games, or puzzle games, and are largely casual and freely accessible via the internet.

The format was first introduced prior to the era of video games in the early 1900s with crossword puzzles published in daily newspapers. Eventually, more styles of game such as pen-and-paper logic puzzles like sudoku would also gain prominence. However, the format of a daily minigame or puzzle would skyrocket in popularity within the realm of video games following the social media success of the word game Wordle (2021), which allowed players to share their results via social media. In the wake of Wordle's virality, many independent developers took the format and applied it to other genres and themes, such as Quordle (2022) which asks players to solve four Wordle puzzles at once, Worldle (2022) which is based on geographical trivia, and Nerdle (2022) which applies the format to math equations.
