Here it is, the daddy of all ps2 wrestling games. I remember being constantly impressed by the graphics improvement from Shut Your Mouth when watching my brother play this on our tiny square TV (although the Rock's model in this is still a bit odd). The improvement in gameplay is staggering too considering this was just a year later, it introduces the category grapple system which would then be used for many years afterwards, it changes reversals for strikes and grapples into the shoulder buttons, the season mode is streamlined, fast paced and lots of fun and it introduces statistical ratings for each wrestler.
That last point is both a big plus and a big flaw for HCTP. The plus is it opens up many options for created wrestlers and diversifies the roster highlighting those who specialize in different things, Big show will dominate a smaller man but will be outrun by a Rey Mysterio who will be flying all over the place. The downside is this game's biggest flaw, balance. The special meter fills up based on how much damage you do, for someone like Goldberg who has a strength stat of 10/10 this may take 4 or 5 power moves depending on his opponent's endurance. However for someone like Goldust who has a measly 5/10 it will be a hell of a slog trying to do any damage to a more elite wrestler and he'll get torn to pieces.
It really separates the lower and higher cards, although even someone like Austin or The Rock who have 10/10 endurance will have a hard time against Billy Goldberg because their strength is 8, and that 2 point gap makes a big difference in this game. It will be adjusted and balanced in future games so you can forgive the first try being slightly flawed.
The other downside to this is in reversing. Most of them don't do damage but there is one where the person reversing the grapple elbows his opponent in the gut which not only does damage but it can make their health flash red because of how devastating it is! It's an odd oversight which can turn the tide of a fight instantly.
Complaints aside this game rocks in every other aspect, it has easily the best active roster out of any wrestling game, the people here compared to the next installment Smackdown Vs Raw is crazy.

Comparing this to the modern 2K entries really shows that wrestling games are at their very best when they're arcade-y and fun rather than going for the straight up simulation style route.
yep. trying to simulate what is already a fighting simulation (wrestling) is an interesting idea, but not when you are making a sports game franchise lol
Legit feel this is the best WWE game, not No Mercy. Not to dunk on No Mercy 'cause it's still awesome, but this game has twice the modes and characters, the creation modes are more in-depth, and the action is faster and crazier and still hard-hitting. Also, there's actual video and the audio isn't tinny.
