Disappointing. Started out well and kept me interested, but about half game in, it started to get very samey and became a chore to reach the end. By the last boss I just wanted it to finish already. Seems like the game had potential, but the developers did not have the imagination to make the content more engaging. This is basically a cute, isometric Dark Souls. We have the bonfires and the same but less punishing death and respawn system. The fighting requires a similar methodical approach, involving the study of enemies' moves. There is a shield, a roll and invincibility frames. There are the usual health, stamina, and mana bars. Stamina works a bit differently than DS but the idea is basically the same. Most of what you know about the game's world, lore and mechanics becomes apparent through the gradual collection of the pages of a game manual, written in a coded language with intelligible words here and there to give hints. I can't say I enjoyed this convoluted mysteriousness too much, as some secrets and items (such as the perk cards) require too much effort to decode and offer little in return. The graphics are very good. The world is beautiful and detailed, despite the boxy aesthetic. The beginning of the game is exciting and fresh, giving both familiar and new experiences, but unfortunately loses steam by the end. After defeating the last boss (the worst and most uninspired boss fight in recent memory), the player is urged to continue and explore more of the world, but I did not have any urge to do so.
