Pros: + The "free-flow" melee combat system from Arkham has been stolen and recreated pretty faithfully, and while the system is fairly easy they have some Spiderman-exclusive ideas for certain enemies that feel good to play. Also, the counter mechanic now actually makes sense because of spidey-sense, so that's a nice touch. + Decent story with a couple not-terrible plot twists is benefitted by some pretty good voice acting, mostly on Spidey's part. He does have one scene with Gwen Stacy late in the game that is so bad that the game actually makes fun of it though, lol. + Spider-Man himself takes progressively more battle damage, complete with scars on his suit and body, and it looks really good and makes it feel as though something was accomplished after a mission + There are random events that occur outside around the city, like muggings, people who need to be brought to clinics, and investigative photoshoots. The former two are huge wastes of time used to pad the game but the latter is a genuinely interesting side-mission structure that provides a nice break between combat missions. ++ You can tell that the game was mostly made by people who genuinely enjoy the character of Spider-Man. Although he can be pretty annoying at times, he is very much the character he is in the first four movies and comics here, complete with shit-talking and melodrama. There's a bunch of references to other villains, characters, and series pretty much everywhere as well. ++ The outdoor Manhattan robot boss fights are fucking sweet and feel amazing to fight in such an open environment, maneuvering around, shooting webshots in between swings and looking for weakspots +++ The outdoor Manhattan itself is a blast to play around in because of how kinetic the swinging mechanics are compared to the indoor variant. Each web needs to be individually pulled and there is so much momentum that can be gained from it. Some of the best moments of the game come from simple races around the map because moving around feels that damn good. Seriously hope that the upcoming Insomniac title has a similar mechanic to it
Cons: - The stealth gameplay is really kind of throwaway, with no real strategies involved and mostly just waiting for people to walk far enough away that they don't notice when you take someone out. The actual rooms that the stealth sections take place in are also very cramped, and in most cases you kind of have to wonder how they don't see Spidey right above them. - Art direction for UI, enemies, and bosses ranges from generic to ugly for most of the game. The cross-species bosses suffer the most from this, as they're all uninteresting human hybrids with some other animal. - The boss fights themselves with the cross-species bosses are also extremely repetitive as none of them really have an especially unique strategy to them except for Rhino. Thankfully, the robot encounters play dramatically differently, so there is variety eventually to be found in that regard - Most of the upgrades for Spiderman are completely inconsequential or unnoticeable. stuff like "webshots shoot 30% faster" is not something anyone actually gives a shit about -- 100% of levels that do not take place in the Manhattan overworld take place in an Oscorp facility or sewer system. The level design is pretty much totally lacking in variety and this makes long stretches of play feel really tedious. -- In addition, the actual level layouts themselves are extremely similar and lacking in new challenges, which would have helped mitigate those issues entirely. The very first level and very final levels in Oscorp has the exact same general pattern to them, and it really does grind on you after a while
