I mean, holy Jesus how did Sega come up with this stuff?
You control a train from an overhead perspective and you are trying to make it to the goal while a barrage of enemy trains and airplanes whant to destroy you because they hate your rotten guts. Your train can switch tracks whenever it is convenient, gaining helpful fuel and also dodging incoming trains. Your locomotive smoke can also be used(by using the secondary, side-view on the bottom) to destroy the trains hot on your tail, as well as aircrafts, by controling the range of your smoke with a downpress of a button. You also have an invincibility mode which you have in generous amounts, meaning the intent is probably that you should feel no restraint when using it.
Outside the first two levels, Super Locomotive seems to just repeat itself and offers nothing new, but those two levels are so finely tuned that you couldn't ask for a better adrenaline-pumping game from Sega at that time, and the latter levels don't really fall that short for being so similar either. An overlooked gem in Sega's arcade catalogue.
