You want it to be good. The intro cinematic, the overt almost real-time strategy styled addition to battles is incredibly ambitious.
And nearly everything new does not feel good. Controlling the game when in walking mode is clunky and unpleasant. Things that should be exciting challenges are way wayyyyyy too easy (random Star Wolf battles, etc.). So many little instances of fights and attacks are over before you know it. So many planet areas involve going inside little ship areas and just finding little buttons to flick that almost nothing gives itself its own personality and worst of all, it's just not fun to do.
There's impressive tech in moving this game from Star Fox to Star Fox 2, but man the new ideas simply do not pan out to anything fun. I'm glad it was released, I'm sad it still feels unfinished.

I feel like if this game was actually released when it was supposed to it would have a MUCH higher rating. I don’t get people that like the first game but not this one.
Feels more like a tech demo than anything else (you can argue the same about the first game, but I much preferred the on-rails shooting segments to all the open combat stuff here).
The RTS elements, visuals and sound are cool, but the individual segments are generally pretty shallow and uninteresting (repetitive and short first-person missile/Star Wolf shootouts, walk on buttons to open doors, shoot stuff to open more doors, etc.). Not to mention that you can finish a run in 45 minutes! I'll admit I found the ground walker segments to be the best part here. Archaic controls aside, I found you had better control over it than in the star wing portions.
great, still unfortunately held back by technical limitations. would have loved to see more of this on a game like 64, zero did absolutely no justice to these ideas
