Solid game, but becomes way too unforgiving near the end
I wanted to love this game. I really did. I love the concept and character designs a lot here as they're basically lovecraftian abominations as well as a cool soundtrack to go with it. The visuals are great too because it reminds me a lot of a combination of Quake, Blood, Metroid prime, and even a bit of Chex Quest too, with the really gloomy and macabre landscapes. Considering this is a DOOM conversion wad, the combat is also great and fast-paced.
The game starts out fine until it becomes WAAAAAAAAY too difficult during the final quarter of it. I don't have an issue with hard games but the difficulty spike here is way too brutal, some of the enemies are way too strong and spongey, regardless of what weapon you're using. Especially the Matriarchs that just soak up damage and do a shitload of damage if you're not careful. I was plain this on EASY mind you. And don't even get me started on those flying things that look like levitating tree trunks. Just imagine a Cyberdemon that could fly,
However, despite all these flaws, I do respect the fact that a lot of love was really put into this game as I think Scumhead is definitely a really talented and creative developer and I'll definitely be sure to keep up with his work, and I really hope that maybe this game will grow on me someday.
Pros:
- Great visuals and character-designs
- Good soundtrack
- Earlier parts of the game are pretty enjoyable
- Combat is fast and enjoyable
Cons:
- Game gets way too difficult around the final six levels
- Some of the enemies feel too spongey
- The final boss is absolutely brutal
