Rogue's innovative design happened to provide a future template for many good games to build upon and stand out both mechanically and visually for decades to come. However, as for the actual game itself, it shouldn't be viewed as little more then an exhibitionary piece of video game history. It's very bare bones in regards to player choice and it's mechanics, but due to it's innate simplicity you can still wind up deriving some enjoyment from it.

Doing so will make it easier to search for your post and give it more visibility. To link an item, use the search box above, or find the shortcut that appears on the page that you want to link. Compared to Temple of Apshai which was out a year ago, I'd say Rogue was already a bit passe, but the random dungeon generator and deepening levels more than make up for it. Some of its more dubious mechanical choices still hang around the genre derrivates(food, seriously), but you can't do much when it's a masochistic genre, and Rogue itself is as good as they come. Definitely worth a try. You gotta appreciate its sense of immediacy: you collect items just by walking into them. Shocking.

Innovative? Back in its day. Nowhere near the level of the modern roguelikes. Even if you factor in nostalgia, I don't understand the high rating. There are hundreds of better roguelikes by now.
