Roarr! The Adventures of Rampage Rex

You know this game is probably going to be bad when the featured review on the Steam store page is “We check out Roarr! The Adventures of Rampage Rex”. They must be scraping the barrel for anything remotely positive.

First thing you notice is that the framerate seems low, or maybe animations are too fast? Either way, it doesn't look, or feel right. The simple, bold colourful graphics are fine, although I think the general feel is that it seems like a basic Unity game. There's some costumes for your T-Rex; I quite liked the panda.

There's loads of objects that you can run into to charge your special attack metre. I thought some of these had a bad sense of scale. For example, trees are far bigger than houses (sure, some trees are that big but maybe not palm trees).

The sound design is poor. It would be nice to hear more stomp, and satisfying destruction sounds. Ploughing into buildings is silent, and there's no crash or bang when they land.

As you move around, the camera position feels slightly off, so you don't really get a good view of your surroundings without trying to manually correct it.

The moveset seems limited, and I generally just alternated with the 2 attack buttons just to add some variety into the monotonous gameplay. Even when there's different creatures aesthetically, I didn't really use any variation of strategy to take them down. With the limited moveset, I wasn't sure what the strategy for the bosses were other than slash away, retreat to find a healing item (meat) and charge up your special bar, then go in for another attack. Repeat about 3 times and the boss should be defeated.

I wasn't sure if there was a consistent pattern to when the items drop. On the first level, meat seemed like it would drop with one of the last enemies in the area, but then seemed random after that. There's some other attack items, but it wasn't clear if they actually did anything, maybe it boosts your next attack?

If you die, you have to start the entire level again which is frustrating if you die on the boss.

The gameplay loop is simply, destroy a group of enemies, move to the next area and repeat. Even though the levels are short, they do feel too long. Maybe a nice idea would be to give you targets such as "destroy 10 houses/cars" etc. This would give you an observation challenge.

I guess it is fun for about 5 minutes and you could complete it in around 1.5 hours. However, the final level is quite problematic; it is a boss rush with a lack of objects to charge your special metre and lack of health restoration items. Maybe it is easier if you play co-op?
