I think Rise of Legions of has a misleading description when it says it's a hybrid of tower defense and MOBA, when it's neither of those genres but rather influenced by it. This game plays more like Minion Masters (and Clash Royale to an extent) where you have 1 lane that you need to push through. There is no tower defense here (it's not cause there is tower defending that it's the genre tower defense!), it's really about PvP strategy.
The gameplay is simple. You have troops moving forward and you must create more and more to push your way to your enemies core. You don't actually control the troops, you just spawn them with your mana that regenerates, and you can also cast a spell here and there. You also have basic spawners that create troops from your core every 30 seconds or so. Your opponent does the same, so the strategy is really important to outplay your opponent. The game is built on deck building, you unlock new cards and you choose which one you bring to the battle. The game puts your on a tier level based on your deck power so your opponent will have a similar power level deck giving you a mostly fair match all of time. The games are 5-10 minutes each, and I used to think that whoever steals the mid tower first wins the game, but after a few more games I realized that's not true and that giving it up first might be a good strategy for a more powerful counter-push.
The game is F2P so it does have the P2W/Infinite Grind aspect of it that I don't feel that I'm ready to dedicate myself to (I did play Clash Royale daily for 3 years straight), you do need to play a whole lot to get the coins to unlock the more powerful cards (which are first unlocked by doing certain activities, like playing 30 times a previous spell for example, and then it asks you for the coins to get them). Of course you can get the coins by doing your daily quests and winning some games, but you have to be a pretty dedicated player to reach the top stuff.
The game is still fairly young and I'm sure the devs will bring in some good updates over time, but overall I can't see myself playing this all the time. It's a good time killer to play a game here and there, but the level of dedication to reach top level is just too much for me at the moment, and frankly the game is not exciting enough for me to give it that amount of time. I would not recommend this game, but I can't say to avoid it either as it's fairly enjoyable to a degree.
