Unlike the NES counterpart, a great deal of the arcade Punch-Out! is understandably primitive, and the NES port's greatest appeal, which is figuring out the moveset and characteristics of all the fighters, is far less pronounced in this one(although still present). Some things arcade Punch-Out! does easier, like entering a high-power mode where every one of your hits is a super punch or a knock-out, but it is also incredibly difficult entering this high-power mode because you need to build up to it by flawlessly landing hits on the opponent and not getting any damage. This means that in many respects you have to be even more precise in this game than in the more forgiving NES version.
Somehow there are less embarrasing stereotypes in here than the full-on cartoonish NES version as a lot of the fighters here are based slightly more on reality and on the native-to-the-USA notions of boxers. Nothing really strikes distasteful about Pizza Pasta sans the name, for instance. You try comparing that to Great Tiger or Piston Honda. This also makes arcade Punch-Out! decidedly a whole deal less colourful.

The play control isn't as tight as the NES version - Little Mac Insert Name Here feels more sluggish - but otherwise this holds up better than I thought it would.
