Kind of inadvertedly, Popeye belongs to a "trilogy" of Donkey Kong games, building on the gameplay precedents of Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr., which is just more enhanced by the idea that Popeye should've been the stand-in for Mario originally(and besides, it's not a coincidence that the Famicom launch titles have been those three games specifically). Like the Donkey Kong games your objective is bound to a single screen location with levels of platforms and climbable obstacles, only the objective here is to collect various objects Olive Oyl throws your way, instead of reaching the top as in Donkey Kong games.
Unlike the Donkey Kong games where the goal was to climb up, tracing the trickling hearts/musical notes/letters forces you to shift focus to climbing both up and down, while the semi-intelligent AI of Brutus comes to chase you through all the way in a Pac-Man vein(even the spinnach is practically a power-pellet stand-in). This is some deliberately cool stuff, though the arcade version as its predecessors comes off as too bloody hard, and the spinnach does not help.
The NES port curbs that difficulty to a managable and enjoyable level, by placing the Sea Hag to the second round and significantly toning down Brutus' aggression.
The Atari 5200 port is terrible, what the hell happened here
