30 Years after "Pocky & Rocky" was released, we get Pocky & Rocky Reshrined. The series had a shaky history with a decent sequel with Pocky & Rocky 2, a pretty bad game boy advance game and a totally forgotten pseudo-spin off on PS2.
Pocky & Rocky Reshrined is basically an alternative timeline Pocky & Rocky 1. First two level are near re-creation with some mild augmentation with updated little item secrets, bigger sprites and some new items.
What comes after is a nice way to explore very similar area from the first game (castle, flying ship, and a little area that feels like it pulls a bit from early Pocky & Rocky 2). Thankfully it keeps the more memorable level bits (less mountain, more flying ship)
New characters are also introduced that have very different play styles (one surprisingly doesn't even use projectiles but might be the best character in the game).
If there's any upsetting bit is that it's not numbing hard as the SNES version but just as short. You can beat this in two hours or so if you are a seasoned vet. There are a few extras that you can unlock like one bonus character and a free mode (surprised this mode isn't available from the beginning).
If you liked Pocky & Rocky on SNES and crave a fresh-ish return, dig in, if you are new, try the SNES game first to see. For everyone else, it's a decent throw-back game that is fun for its short run time. Hurray?
