Planetfall

The only reason people praise Planetfall is because of Floyd's death scene, and even that is not exactly true because he gets repaired in the end. Even still, Floyd is a quirky presence that doesn't do a lot, and is more used as an item for gameplay purposes. The rest of the game is a tonally inconsistent ride with tiring, tedious puzzles that doesn't measure to some of Infocom's earlier games. I thought Starcross and Suspended were more nuanced as sci-fi games, and Deadline was much more creative. It's a shame because I quite like Steve Meretzky as a writer, but he would improve immensely with his adaptation of Hitchhiker, and the magnum opus A Mind Forever Voyaging. Planetfall tries too hard to emulate the humour of Hitchhiker, and I suppose, it is fortunate that Planetfall became obsolete very quickly since the real thing would be released just a few months later.
