      From what I can remember, it just didn't impress me on any front, aside from the occasionally nice graphics. Those graphics also came at the cost of the frame rate tanking at the worst moments possible

      It was universally seen as a disappointment at the time of its release. The problem isn't so much the game itself even though as the other poster already stated it had a lot of lag issues and things like that, the real problem was that every other major FPS series evolved around this one and it seemed old fashioned in a bad way, when it was supposed to be the first killer app of its era.
