It wasn't that long ago when Codemasters made Toybox Turbos (2014). You would have thought they would have elaborated on what they did for that game. With Micro Machines World Series, Code Masters have banked on it being a popular online game, so haven't bothered with a dedicated single player mode.
The main menu has Special Event, AI Match, Public Match, Local Play. Local Play you can choose a track, number of laps, and disable the weapons. Public Match searches for a game for 1.5 minutes before throwing you into an AI Match, so they are essentially the same mode. Special Event looks like it changes over time, but is an online focussed match.
There's three modes; Battle, Race and Elimination. Battle is a team based arena with Capture the Flag, Bomb Delivery and King Of The Hill matches. Race is a race with weapons, and Elimination is the mode where falling behind and off the screen eliminates that player.
You can only level up and unlock new content by playing online. There's skins, voice and graves to unlock and customise your cars. There are 12 cars which feel very similar but are aesthetically different such as: Tank, Ambulance, Police Car, Truck, Monster Truck.
Graphically, the game is amazing. It looks great, and there's an impressive amount of detail in the household objects. It's great to drive around a kitchen, plough into a Cheerio whilst a dog is eagerly looking up at the table.
When you consider the number of courses and cars, and how the game is pretty much online-only; it feels rather bare-bones. This game could have been brilliant and that's why it feels so disappointing. Even with the recent inclusion in the Humble Bundle, the online presence is basically non-existent.
