Metal Saga: Chain of Sandstorm - the fifth installment in Success' Metal Max series, adapted their formula to the PS2 age: A post-apocalyptic, open-world JRPG with non-linear progression and the ability to end at any time. The opening scene - in fact, sets the tone with its option to even refuse the call for adventure, thus ending the story by living a relatively modest life. There are no mandatory quests, just a selection of bosses to track down and defeat (in any order or not at all) and a world packed with the collectibles, materials, areas and side events that one would expect from the format. Vehicles make a return with their own host of customizable parts and upgrades, plus all sorts of weird features (for example: status effects that require a trip to the car wash to remove), and remain the primary sources of damage in-combat. Overall - their brand of hands-off, free-roaming gameplay benefits greatly from comedic writing and lots of quirky characters, while offering a sense of player agency that would please fans of Romancing SaGa or Legend of Mana.
