Title
A post apocalyptic arcade racing shooter that certainly is a unique and strange standout from the NES library, more so for the fact that its a full on allusion to mad max from Nintendo of all companies. Viewing this game now, its nothing really all that special but I still have a fondness for its post apocalyptic like setting. While I can see why this was never revived by Nintendo to be its own franchise, I like the general premise enough and would love to see this be fully fleshed out into a competent remake. Also props to the main theme, it is a bouncy piece of music that definitely feels like a homage to some corny low budget crime show from the 70's.

Mach Rider is a bleak, bleak game.

The world has crumbled to ruins, you are completely alone(save for alien bikers that want you dead) and the soundtrack makes it clear the odds are stacked against you. You balance your speed and your ammo to turn tight corners, insurmountable obstacles, and the many bikers that will ambush you from behind, and figuring out how to juggle these many threats will keep your mind racing. It's much easier than the other racing games of its time would suggest, but if you are looking for a jovial biking experience like Hang-On, Mach Rider is not it. I'm amazed how the normally clean Nintendo took this as a launch title.

I guess it was aparent: Everybody liked Mario in 1985, but if you were one of the bad boys, then your game of choice was Mach Rider.

When i saw the concept of the game i was interested, its a a game in which you ride a motorcycle and are given the opportunity to shoot the bikers in front of you. Unfortunatly, what i failed to know beforehand, is that the bikers are faster than you and they overtake you from being. And if you dont dodge them when they are behind you, they will crash into you most of the times. This makes the game really frustrating to play. You need to divide your attention between looking ahead and in your back, and somehow the other bikers really want to collide with you. So yea the gameplay is a bit weak because of this. Apart from that, it is a pretty looking game visually for 1985, giving off a sense of speed.

    Considering how tightly Nintendo clings to most of its current IPs, it's strange to look back and see these little one-off games that never really went anywhere. This game is incredibly rough around the edges, but there was obviously the attempt at some kind of setting and atmosphere here. I don't love this, but it does make me a little nostalgic for a time when Nintendo would just throw a bunch of things at the wall to see what stuck.
