Obviously "borrowed" the Tomb Raider formula (ironic, as Tomb Raider was heavily influenced by Indy to begin with) and made it 10x better. Its flaws (gameplay clunkiness at times with stiff movement, which is honestly, easy to get used to) seem overstated, especially when almost everything else is wonderful - the story, atmosphere, sound design (all of the music, ambient sounds + voice acting) and level design make for a great gaming experience with a high level of cinematic immersion.
Over time, this one has even surpassed Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis for me (and that one is indeed great + in general seems to be far more cherished) to be the best Indy game (obviously both are very different types of game). Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb is also very good, but doesn't quite capture the same magic and goes a bit too far the other way with a slight over-reliance on combat (though that area is clearly improved). Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings was a bit of a generic mess which I didn't even end up finishing. And Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure is nostalgic (me and a friend trying to sticky tape the cat in venice when we were 7 or 8), but ultimately too primitive and game-breaking to be particularly good.
Back to Infernal Machine - so pleased Steam finally reissued it + in a compatible state (for me anyway), saves me having to keep my original disc in pristine condition and finding numerous workarounds on a specific laptop to get it to anything resembling playable.
