As a lifelong fan of the series this one's a heart breaker. I can see what they were going for I really can but it just doesn't work. The open world format is pretty much the main attraction for video games these days and most other ones do a better job at it than this.
The combat has some cool ideas but at this point there is such an emphasis on wiping out hundreds of soldiers in one attack that there's basically no challenge anymore. Soldiers pretty much won't attack you and officers are pushovers, meaning you can ride into a battle, find the commander, kill them in a minute long musou attack and then ride away to the next one.
The voice cast that had been mostly around since DW4 are gone in place of people who sound like they learned how to speak yesterday. The soundtrack is fine but you won't hear it through the dialogue and screaming, for some reason the actual sounds of impacts and weapons are minuscule compared to soliders going "WAHHH, GARRRR, URRRGGHH!!".
Not a fan.
