The game gets from me 3 only for one reason: characters. Characters of full Disney variety, old, the oldest, new and the newest. They are almost perfectly redisigned into 3D, this is the only thing that I can't complain. mixes of loved songs are great, I must say that. The rest of it, without Disney backroung is 1,5/5.
Disney Speedstorm itself is just decent, playable and quite enjoyable kart racer.
Speaking shortly about the purpose of the game: we pick one of dozens of Disney characters, who are redesigned to be drivers. They are jumping in their karts and using a few skills that can be found on the road we try to end on the first posistion which is understood as a win. Every skill in the box that can be collected while speeding through beautiful maps has at least two or three uses: normal, backwards and charged. Skills and their uses differ and can be used in our favor to speed up, defend or attack opponents. Every racer also can hit side-hit the opponent when close, then in some cases we are stunning them and/or gain shield. We also have
crew members - second plan characters that boost our abilities when we pick them to a race.
Let's start from the core of the gameplay, racing that is. I'm not a fan of that, in my opinion it's hard to get used to it, for me the feeling of speed, is a bit weird, I can't always tell if I have the chance in the match or not. I know, it's a kart racer where we are shooting and blasting each other and driving should be funny and dynamic, but here I have a feeling that it's just chaos. And bugs, blocking on the walls when someone hits you is a birthplace of anger.
Now, this is the worst thing we came onto. The game is frustrating, you never know if you have chances, and you
MUST grind. Better, you can lose plenty of your money to lvl up everything possible, and then voila, you are in the top without much skill. Yes, this game is
pay to win. But it's for children! As I presume at least, as it's friendly, colourful because it's Disney. Even if the target of developers were not children, kids will play it, for dozens of reasons, and I'm afraid they can be frustrated, upset and angry because it's absolutely too difficult to win anything. Maybe I'm just too old and kids (I'm talking like 3-8 years old) are not that fragile and can handle chaos of Speedstorm (on the other hand I remember playing Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Jazz Jackrabbit no problem, now my eyes and brain can't see what's going on there).
But what I'm sure is bad is the
micropayments. It's just really not good to program to children buying
fake things for real money and even force them to do so because for someone it can be too difficult and still that someone would desperately want to win or earn, collect something. There are lots of challenges, missions, limited races, all is giving us exp or valuables to get more thing that we invest in more things so we can have more and be better.
This game is truly designed to be addicting, but not much of fun or satisfaction is paying off from it.
As I said, variety of characters and their designs are the good side of the game, yet the
skills of them are so repetitive and boring I even forgot sometimes that the new character I earned have something like this.
Speaking of skills, because we are talking about multiplayer mode ofc, to be fair I have to say in the higher ranks those hours of grinding and traing helped me to win some races.
But I would do it faster if I would pay for some things.I've spent until this moment almost 50 hours. I'm an achievement hunter, so I've came to decision that it's managable to get them all and yes, now I need only to grind the heck out of Meg and Herc so they are 3-star racers and collect a few avatars in one way or another. Then I will leave it. Yes, the urge to grind and exp and collect everything possible is gigantic, but no. My time is too expensive to be addicted of this.
Of course I was talking about multiplayer mode, in which I got the farthest with Elisabeth Swann (Emerald), just because she is OP and I needed to EXP her up.
cons: constant intrusive gacha mechanics even if you're F2P. at least there's a sense of progression i guess????
