Destruction Derby 64 features a series of both full-fledged tracks, on which opponents race in opposing directions, and small arenas, such as The Junkyard, where I spent many hours in multiplayer as a kid. The World Championship mode comprises the bulk of the single player content, taking place across four levels of difficulty and allowing you to unlock additional cars and tracks. Its scoring system strikes a solid balance between racing and all-out destruction: you'll need to pick up additional time at checkpoints, but can also earn it by ramming opponents, and so it's possible to win even if you're not necessarily the last alive.
Importantly, the game's handling and physics are surprisingly good. On the other hand, the music sucks, being the typical techno of the era, and the graphics aren't much to look at. The frame rate isn't great, either, and suffers further on some of the more detailed tracks. This can be mitigated by the use of the bumper cam at the cost of losing the dramatic view of debris flying after collisions.
It's flawed, but it's great fun.
