ASMIK World has you following a cute dinosaur named Boomer as he climbs 32 floors of a tower to defeat some grand evil, or something. I honestly have to wonder
Right off the bat, you'll be introduced to the music and artwork the former of which is atrocious and the latter pretty mediocre. There is one main theme for the entire game and it has this ear-wrenching buzzy bassline that never alternates beyond "left hand of a ragtime player", and Boomer himself is hard to look at. The environments are plain and the enemies are throwaway. Looks aren't everything though, how's the game?
Most puzzle games revolve around using logic to deduce the solution of a simple mechanic and setup. The payoff is using your cognitive ability, familiarity of the mechanic, and maybe even your reflexes to solve it. Boomer's central mechanic is digging up holes to trap enemies inside and sometimes score points. So you trap enemies to win, right?
Wrong - you have to dig up a key somewhere in the level. The enemies are completely tertiary obstacles. You will have to scour quite literally every square on the entire level (usually a 20x20 grid) to find this fucking key. And Get this - if you don't find it fast enough, the enemies will be able to dig it up and move it. You then have to either kill the enemy with the key by trapping it (unmarked, by the way), or if you weren't fast enough, find the new hiding place. And this can be repeated multiple times.
Did I mention there was a 200 second time limit on each stage yet?
Apparently, if you really truly love this game and manage to (irl) survive all 32 levels, you then have to descend the tower which means replaying the entire game in reverse order, with all of the bosses miraculously re-spawned. There is literally no semblance of a reward for the hours you wasted.
Make no mistake, ASMIK World is a total pile of dogshit. Why this sold any copies is beyond me, let alone how Japan got a fucking sequel.
