Bases Loaded 3

Bases Loaded 3 was a more refined baseball video game - if not less memorable - than its two predecessors for Jaleco.

The hitting mechanism for BL3 was still random as far as I could tell. Meaning that you could square a ball up in the middle of the strike zone and hit an easy grounder to the second basemen. Conversely you could swing at garbage low and outside the strike zone and pull it for a long home run. No consistency/realism in that regard whatsoever and really frustrating when you were playing the CPU.

The fielding system, however, was *much* more improved in BL3. Seriously, trying to field even a routine ball-in-play in the first two games was a serious challenge unless it was right at you. A line drive or grounder would often come hurtling in your tiny fielder's general direction and you had to have ninja-like reflexes to even have a chance at fielding it. It didn't help the fielders felt like they were on ice skates either. Oh right! And you never knew which camera angle you were gonna get after a ball was in play.

So anyway, thankfully Bases Loaded 3 fixed these problems. And in that regard it was a notably better game.

All that being said, elements we now take for granted in baseball titles were absent. Real life licensed players, franchise mode, etc. If you wanted these luxuries on NES, you needed to get R.B.I. Baseball and/or Baseball Stars instead. The Bases Loaded franchise was merely another option at the time that really doesn't hold up anymore.
