The Victor Company of Japan, commonly referred to as JVC (Japan Victor Company) is a Japanese electronics corporation based in Yokohama. The company was founded in 1927, introduced the first Japanese television sets and is famous for having developed the VHS video recorder. The company also publishes music under the
JVC and
Victor [JPN] names.
JVC's use of the Victor brand was relatively limited since
Sony Music Entertainment retains international ownership of the rights to the Victor name outside the country, but between 1972-96, JVC operated
Victor Entertainment which handled and published many of JVC's entertainment assets with the Victor brand. In 2008, JVC was acquired by Kenwood Corporation and became JVCKenwood, though the company continues to use the JVC logo and branding.
