Risk of Rain 2 is a splendid 3D imagining of its predecessor. It’s a third person action roguelike that has both melee and shooter combat. This is a game about floating. You float into the game world in a lonely escape pod, floating around for loot or baddies early in the morning. You meet some baddies that are floating around in the air, while you yourself send floating blobs of pain into their faces. In the loot there is a magic feather that lets you jump one additional time in the air. This increases floating dramatically, especially since the feathers are infinitely stackable. The stages are all abstract paintings with buildings floating on top of chairs. Stacking loads of power-ups lets you strike much harder and attacks get chained automatically with items like The Ukulele. The music is wailing, drawn out, floating guitars reminiscent of clouds and weather. There’s something about the blend of combat, loot, and exploration in this game that really gets you in the zone. The only other games I’ve played as much on Switch were Dark Souls and Breath of the Wild. I prefer this to Hades and Dead Cells, because of the floatiness and the exploration is better.
