Who cares if you listen? by Milton Babbitt
On the purpose of composition by Christopher Palestrant

uh... I am so boring.

correction queue

OK, now, everybody has some explanations about how they rate, why not me?
***** - This is completely must-hear for everyone.
****' - Eh, this is basically also must-hear.
**** - Everything in this category can be tagged with that "highly recommended".
***' - I basically enjoy listening to this in whole. As I intentionally choose what I am going to listen, there are lot of them.
*** - Still enjoyable, but lesser.
**' - Still enjoyable, maybe not through whole duration or everytime. However, every 2.5*-rated album is still recommended. Mind that when you see my 2.5*.
** - There are still enjoyable parts.
*' - There are at least few moments of some worth.
* - It is interesting, but mostly not from musical reasons.
' - No interest at all.

Giving ratings became a painful experience. I really don't want to deride any music (correction: in the case of 2* and less - yes, some of them, but they deserve it).
Mind that majority of ratings is based of one listen and are first-time impression. I try to get acknowledged of as much interesting music as possible, because I believe that this is a part of way how to really enjoy it. Also: I want to listen to a lot of music until I'm still young because I'm afraid of lack of time in future - you know, job and stuff around that. But I also come back to the already rated things for repeated listens - those from 2,5* to 5* - and my ratings are always subject to change as I listen to them more a think about them more. Thus if you feel like I'm wrong somewhere and are in need to tell me that, do that please! If you are just in need of non-constructive insults - well - do that, too.

Morton Feldman's For Philip Guston is the only really stable thing here.

Music is not entertainment, but serious epistemological research.
Philosophy is not therapy. Its purpose is not to change the way you see the world, nor its purpose is to make you feel better. If philosophy doesn't affect society, or if it doesn't change the world, then such philosophy is useless. Philosophy is serious research.
Philosophy of music and pure aesthetic is not nonsensical babbling. Its purpose is not to interpret or decode the works. It is methodology of epistemological research called music.

° Cinematography fails by definition, but some people succeeded and succeed in turning it into art.
° History of cinematography is a history of technical inventions, not history of art.
° Saying that all art is "subjective & relative" is - most of time - just excuse for intellectual laziness.
° Good art is not easy.

In your review for The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, you wrote: "There is no inner struggle inherent to composition and it can't be, but that's what makes my favorite classical compositions great, and that's what Mingus' composition necessarily lacks."

What do you mean by "inner struggle inherent to composition"? Could you point me in a direction where I might hear what you mean?

Hey, I saw that you gave Glenn Gould's interpretation of the Well-Tempered Clavier a 4.5, but you only gave the second book a 3.5. I'm really curious what you're reason for that might have been.

I think you might get a kick out of this track from Clara Iannotta. She's really proving to be one of the most exciting young composers out there today, can't wait to hear more from her.
