MUSIC RANKINGS SYSTEM
As of June 4 2017, I'm switching from my previous 20-point rating system to a 10-point scale like Pitchfork uses. The reason for this is that using a 20-point rating system is stupid, and while using a 10-point scale with increments of 0.1 is also pretty stupid, it at least has some sort of precedent with a "respected" source of music journalism. The other reason is that this way there are 100 different ratings that something can get as opposed to 40, which means a greater degree of specificity (not that it matters).
Anyways, the way it works is if something gets a 5.0, it's completely average. I didn't feel like my life was either improved or that my time was terribly wasted after listening to it. Anything above a 5.0 can be considered above average, and anything below is pretty much varying degrees of bad. That said, I really only recommend listening to songs with ratings of 5.3ish and up, because life's too short to listen to just-okay music, and with albums it's probably like 6 and up, because they take up more time than just single songs and thus are a greater waste if you don't like them. Anything above a 9.0 can be considered Great with a capital-g; that is, it's in some way spectacular rather than just good. Anything above 9.5 is probably around the best in its genre; anything above 9.8 is pretty much in the highest tier of excellence. 10.0s are not awarded lightly. There are probably around 50 songs and less than 10 albums to which I'd give give that score.
So that's how it works, I guess. Now I have to convert all my pre-existing ratings to my new scale. What a pain.
