I'm not embarrassed by any music I listen to or own. I was at one time and in turn pawned off music that I never should have. That's cost me money and time I'll never get back. Ironic that the record store I bought and sold from in the day was called Poverty Records.
I used to be snobby about my music, but now I realize music is part sense and part memory. A song may suck, but if I have a good memory to associate with the song, it elevates it above mediocrity. I like Olivia Newton-John and Rush. I don't care if the music is over-indulgent or under-stated. Both have their place in music and good music uses both techniques.
I like to create playlists that recreate pop radio at a specific time. Radio stations that play 70s music, or 80s music are meaningless to me. Magnify into the months of each year, and you'll get a feel for a song's real soul, and those that were played along side it. "I Love Music" by the O'Jays goes hand in hand with "Fox on the Run" by Sweet. It doesn't go hand in hand with Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive." You had to experience the moment get the full impact of the memory trigger, but, it's fun exploring moments in time even if you weren't there.
