Interesting! I like Autre Ne Veut and the new Frank Ocean but wouldn't have thought to associate them with The Weeknd, probably because even at their most woozy they never sound quite as suffocatingly claustrophobic as The Weeknd. Hype Williams, though? That makes perfect sense to me.

I guess this also means I finally gotta actively listen to Drake now...

I think the Weeknd/Gaucho comparison is spot-on, and the only reason I haven't mentioned it in any of my reviews is because I feel like I already talk about Steely Dan too much. I have a weird attraction to music that captures the neon allure of rich-kid decadence while showing how spiritually vacant it is (see also: Roxy Music, Kaputt by Destroyer, arguably The Hissing of Summer Lawns by Joni Mitchell). I think the difference with The Weeknd is that there's no comforting cushion of ironic detachment with him - as in, it's not an exaggeration, he actually IS that guy.

Also, James Ferraro writes good songs sometimes... Leather High School is pretty legit in a "this would probably work even better as a Tim and Eric sketch" way.

how's yr summer break treating ya so far?

I'm mostly very tired. I moved in with my partner a few weeks ago and it's a big adjustment after two years of being holed up at my parents' place. It took us this long to get our internet hooked up and I'm almost embarrassed at how excited I am to start writing RYM reviews again.

Prog rock rules to me, which is weird because I didnt think i could stomach the cheesier aspects, it's something id feel self conscious listening to with someone else but am totally fine embracing alone
