but seriously, i actually feel like watching that sunday night i was witnessing a piece of television (or cinema basically) history... i mean, jesus. i'd venture to say that's the most avant-garde and unusual and break-all-the-rules hour that's ever aired on television. it really kind of makes the craziest peaks episodes from the original run, like lynch's episode 29, look like regular narrative storytelling or something.
i mean, yeah, i have no words either really. while the 2001 (and by extension, tree of life) touchpoints were obvious, plus (maybe coincidentally) the trinity focus reminded me a lot of carnivale's similar emphasis on same and some bits were very reminiscent of begotten... it was still its own thing. it was totally a new step forward for lynch, almost revolutionary. i'm stunned. i need to watch it again. but it was not only the most unconventional and disturbing peaks episode (give or take an episode 14), it was possibly a contender for the most out-there thing lynch has ever attempted, in terms of the ambition, the ambiguity, the artfulness, the fucking everything.
in short, i sincerely believe that in the future - whatever the consensus ends up being on season 3 as a whole - that episode 8 will be seen as some kind of incredible masterpiece and milestone, not quite like anything before it.
or as my main man soderbergh tweeted (paraphrasing), "if the latest episode of twin peaks didn't blow your mind, you don't have a mind."
also i loved everything about that appearance from "the nine inch nails," from that odd addition of "the," to the jimmy scott-looking announcer who spoke it (into a mic with what seemed to be a pinecone festooned on its stand), to trent reznor's old timey goth getup, those weird round shades and black leather, the pulsing strobes or whatever and the abrasive, nihilistic, harsh, pained music... putting aside its value on its own, as a piece of art in the midst of the rest of that episode i thought it worked beautifully... and fit in perfectly too with that super-lost highway vibe of the first 5-10 minutes of the hour.
pretty much the episode was like lost highway turning into eraserhead, except it was still 5x bolder and weirder and more viscerally affecting than eraserhead was i think. god, what a fucking treat to be graced with this masterful curveball, no advance notice, just open up showtime and press play and BAM. it was the kind of psychedelic unexpected mindfuck that's less and less common these days when everything is predicted and foreseen and copied and scripted from some previous success.
lit looks exactly as i'd expected. this song is absolutely a sneaky banger

someone already has the Three 6 Mafia episode but we're also planning a general Memphis Rap episode (stuff that's not Three 6 Mafia) and I'd love to have you on board
