Rating System for Music:
• 5.0 - I don't believe in perfection in art, but these are the closest it gets. I can list out flaws for all of my 5 star albums, but what makes them 5 stars is how much I obsess over them. This is really the key difference between the 4, 4.5 and 5 star album for me. So many factors go into how much I enjoy a certain piece of music so it is pretty silly for me to try to determine an objective quality measurement. This is more about how much I enjoy listening to something. 5 star albums usually start out as 4's or 4.5's and grow on me over time. They have held up to repeated listens time and time again and listening to them in any situation is exciting (driving, walking, sitting at home, etc.).
• 4.5 - As stated before, the difference between this and a 5 is the obsession level. These albums still feel very complete and may even have a perfectness to them, but for some reason, may it be occasional lack of interest or one mediocre song, they have not made it to 5 stars.
• 4.0 - With four star albums, I'd still be comfortable saying I love them. It wouldn't feel strange to wear a t-shirt of this album; although music t-shirts are more of a band thing but bear with me here. I've found with a lot of my 4's, when I listen to the whole album straight through, it still feels very complete or perfectish. Outside of the album context, I may only listen to a couple of the songs though (hence the lowered obsession level). This doesn't have to be true though. Perhaps, there is an album I obsess over in a 5 star kinda way, but there may be a jarring fault I find so I feel that I can't rate it higher than a 4.
• 3.5 - These are pretty strange for me. Usually, these include albums that seem absolutely fantastic but I have very little interest in them. Or conversely, similar to what I said in the 4's, I may obsess over parts and dislike other parts. 3.5's have become 4.5's and 5's in the past after the album "grew on me" so I feel like I shouldn't underestimate the potential of these albums. I have these marked as "Recommended" in my rating system because this is really the cut off of where I feel like I've spent my time well.
• 3.0 - I just made these sound bad in the last description, but that is not the case. I would still say I like these albums. It is just that, with all the great music out there, I wish I would have picked a 3.5+ star album to listen to. At least if I find one hidden gem I love, it doesn't feel like time is wasted.
• 2.0 - I wanted to do a new rating system because with the old one, I had all these categories for albums I didn't care about and I often don't listen to albums I don't care about. As a result, I had very few in these lower categories and it felt pointless to differentiate between a 1.5 and 2. Now with a 2, I'm using this as a catch-all category for albums I find boring as a whole or bad or not worth my time at all. Whatever you want to call it.
• 0.5 - I probably won't be using this category too much, but I do want to have something for when I find something offensive.
